20. Display page 7. On the Insert menu, click Page. In the Insert Newsletter Page dialog box, click Calendar in the Available page types list, and then click OK. Publisher inserts a page containing a calendar with a schedule of events, space for one story, and one graphic with a caption. The Zoom level changes to display the whole page. Troubleshooting The new calendar page uses a different font scheme than the one you selected when you created the newsletter. In fact, the font scheme for the entire publication has reverted back to the default for the template on which it is based to maintain consistency with the newly inserted page. Refer to step 22 for more information.

The Performance utility offers a way to monitor threads and the performance bottlenecks they might create. (See Figure 12-4.) The .NET Framework has a performance object named .NET CLR LocksAndThreads that exposes several counters, the most important of which are

# of current logical threads The current number of threads in the application known to the common language runtime in a given application. # of current physical threads The number of native Windows threads created and owned by the common language runtime.

A Windows Phone device is a very good platform to run XNA games. You can create games for the phone and even sell them from the Windows Phone Marketplace. You can test your games on the Windows Phone emulator which is supplied with Visual Studio 2010. The way that XNA programs work on the phone is exactly the same as how games written for the Windows PC or the Xbox work. However, there are some differences in the way that games are played and used on a mobile device. A high number for this counter is a symptom that the application isn t well designed for multithread operations. total # of contentions The total number of times threads in the common lan guage runtime have failed to acquire a managed lock. current queue/sec The average number of threads waiting to acquire a lock; a high value means that most threads spend most of their time waiting for a lock to become available.

The meaning of some of these counters most notably, those related to contention and locks will become evident later in this chapter.

A thread is always terminated when an unhandled exception occurs. However, an exception on a secondary thread for example, a thread used by the garbage collector to call the Finalize method, a thread created with the Thread class, or a thread taken from the thread pool isn t fatal for the application (even if it might cause error mes sages to appear, depending on the type of current application). Only uncaught excep tions thrown by the main thread or an unmanaged thread for example, a thread running in COM objects called by a .NET assembly terminate the application.
