The DisplayMember property must be assigned the name of the property in the lookup class that s used to fill the list area of the control. In the example, this is the Name property of the Department class. The ValueMember property must be assigned the name of the property in the lookup class whose value is actually stored in the main data source when the end user selects an element from the ListBox or ComboBox control. In the example, this is the ID property of the Department class. The DataSource property must be assigned the lookup data source, which can be an IList object or one of the ADO.NET objects that can work as a data source, such as DataTable or DataSet. In the example, this is the array of Department objects.

Once you ve correctly assigned these properties, you can bind the SelectedValue prop erty of the ListBox or ComboBox control to the field in the main data source. In the example, this field is the DepartmentID property of the Employee class. In practice, you can extend the original code to support a lookup ComboBox control by adding just four lines of code in the InitializeBinding procedure:

The first part of the method sets messageString to an empty string. Then the string representation for each Keys item in the array is added to the end of the message. You ve used the ToString method before when you converted dates and times into strings for your clock. ToString asks an object to provide a string of text describing the information it holds. Notice that ADO.NET data binding is two-way, in the sense that when you modify a value in a bound field, the new value is stored in the data source. However, don t forget that the data source is the DataSet object, not the database table, so the data in the database isn t automatically updated. (Read 22 to learn more about how you can update data modified in a disconnected DataSet object.)

A common type of data-bound form is the one that displays data coming from two tables between which a relationship exists. For example, you can create a form like the one in Figure 16-21, with the DataGrid control displaying all the titles related to the publisher currently shown in the topmost TextBox controls.

Creating such a master-detail form is a breeze with the great data-binding features of Windows Forms. In fact, you only have to drop a DataGrid control, name it grdTitles on the form, and add a few statements to the CreateDataSet and InitializeBinding pro cedures (added statements are in boldface):
