Windows developers traditionally used resource files to create multilanguage applications. The problem with resource files is that they don t lend themselves well to the Rapid Appli cation Development (RAD) approach. For example, in all previous versions of Visual Basic you can use only one language for the user interface. To support additional lan guages, you have to author a resource file yourself and write the code that extracts each string or image and moves the strings or images into controls. This problem has been solved in the Visual Studio .NET form designer in a simple, elegant, and effective way.

Let s take the simple form shown in Figure 15-28 as an example. This form contains three strings and one image that should be localized. In general, however, the localiza tion process can involve more than just changing the visible strings in the user interface or strings used from code. For example, you might need to move a control to a differ ent location or make it invisible under some localized versions. At any rate, you should test your form thoroughly before you make it localizable because any change you make to its user interface afterward will require more coding and efforts.

The first step in localizing a form is to set its Localizable property to True. This is a design-time property that you won t find in the Object Browser. It tells the designer s code generator that the values of the properties of the form and its controls are to be loaded from a .resx resource file instead of hard-coded in the source code. Next you should set the form s Language property to the alternative locale that you want to support. This property is available only at design time and you can assign any of the locales that .NET supports to it. (See Figure 15-29.) The form designer continues to display the same interface as before, but you can now change all the properties of the form and its controls (including their position, size, visibility, and so on). All the values that you set from now on will be associated with the alternative locale just selected. Figure 15-30 shows how the form might look to an Italian end user. Of course, you can repeat this procedure with any language that you want to support.

This is very stupid code. It s completely legal and would compile and run, but it s still very stupid because the 100-element array that was created in the second statement is immediately made useless in the third, where pressedKeys is made to refer to another, larger array. This is like building a brand-new office and then destroying the only copy of the telephone number that could be used to contact it. The garbage collector would eventually notice that the array object had no references referring to it and would destroy it, but until this happened, a large chunk of memory would be unusable. The Great Programmer makes sure that when she writes a program, it does not repeatedly create and destroy objects in this way; as a result, her software runs quickly and uses only the minimum amount of memory.
