Because all applications are compiled when they run, even old applications benefit from the adoption of a new CPU a benefit you don t enjoy with traditional compiled applications. There are other runtime-only optimization techniques that traditional compilers can t use. For example, the JIT compiler can optimize method calls even across different components because it can control the entire execution environment. Another exam ple: method calls in the COM world work through indirection and use function point ers in the vtable; methods must work this way because the compiler doesn t know where the target object is loaded at run time. On the contrary, a JIT compiler knows where the target object is in memory and can get rid of those indirections by directly calling the method with a single and faster CALL assembly opcode. A JIT compiler can make its optimizations more effective by monitoring the main appli cation s behavior. For example, the JIT compiler might decide to perform method inlining (an optimization technique that gets rid of method calls by moving the code from the called procedure into the caller routine) only for the routines that are called more frequently. The JIT compiler s current capabilities in flow-control analysis are minimal, but they will surely improve in forthcoming versions.

So far, I ve described the JIT compiler that you will use most frequently on Windows sys tems. You should be aware that the .NET Framework comes with a Native Image Gener ator (NGEN) utility that can compile an entire application at installation time instead of at run time. This approach improves the load time of a .NET application or component, so it s especially useful with shared class and function libraries. Not surprisingly, Microsoft uses this utility for some key portions of the framework itself, such as MSCorLib.dll. In Windows Explorer, such precompiled .NET Framework class library components are marked with the Native Image label, as you can see in Figure 1-2. Before you decide to use NGEN to precompile all your applications, you should con sider that this approach reduces start-up time for only a small number of applications, most notably those that make a lot of method calls when they start. In some cases, precompiling an application can worsen performance because NGEN has no knowledge about the run-time environment and can t use optimization techniques such as adap tive method inlining and cross-assembly optimization. Finally, remember that you can t use NGEN to convert IL to native code and run the executable on another system. As a result, you can t use this tool to make the reverse engineering of your .NET applica tions more difficult.
