All visible controls expose the ForeColor and BackColor properties. As in Visual Basic 6, you can assign a value to these properties from the Properties window, selecting the new color from the Custom palette, the System palette, or the new Web palette (see Figure 15-5). What has changed from previous versions is how you can define a new color in code by using shared methods of the System.Drawing.Color class. First, you can use the FromArgb method if you know the red, green, and blue components of the value you re assigning:

The Color class has several shared properties that return common colors, so you can rewrite the preceding statement as follows:

This is the same loop as before, but you now have a variable called winnerSubscript that holds the position in the array of the winning value. Note that the program copies the value of i into the winnerSubscript when it finds a new winning value. Remember that when you find a new winning value, the variable i holds the subscript in the array where that value is stored. Now that you have the subscript value of the winning score, you can use it in another array to find the string that describes that player. The array is set up as shown in Figure 8-4.

Most common colors are gathered in the KnownColor enumerated type, so you can easily create a list from which the end user can pick a color for example, by using a ComboBox control:

When the user selects a color, you can update your user interface element (such as the background color of a TextBox control) by using the Color.FromName shared method:

This is an array of strings of text. There is an element in the array for each of the buttons on gamepad 1, and the names are lined up with the buttons that are tested. Now, to get the description of the winner, you simply need to look up the name in your table:

Over-reliance on spelling checkers has led to a modern-day misspelling epidemic. People seem to believe that just because a publication has passed a spell-check, it must be OK, but there are numerous common mistakes in word usage, for example using their instead of there, that will pass a spell-check. In critical publications, take the time to use the Word grammar checker, which will catch many of these. The grammar checker indicates questionable usage with a green wavy underline.

(This is the approach used in the demo program shown in Figure 15-6.) Once you have a Color value, you can extract its red, green, and blue components by using the R, G, and B methods:

Old-style Fontxxxx properties, such as FontName and FontSize, are no longer available. All Visual Basic .NET controls that can display text expose a Font property, to which you assign a System.Drawing.Font object. You can assign individual font properties at design time after expanding the Font node in the Properties window. (See Figure 15-7.)

Many Publisher templates use text boxes to emulate the kinds of skinny-column layouts used in newspapers and magazines. To avoid leaving ugly gaps at the ends of lines and to make more content t in less vertical space, Publisher automatically hyphenates multisyllable words that fall within 0.25 inches of the edge of the text box. For each story, you can change the width of the default hyphenation zone, or you can turn off this feature entirely by right-clicking the story you want to change, pointing to Proo ng Tools, and then clicking Hyphenation to display the Hyphenation dialog box.
