The .NET runtime maintains three log files: the default log, the ASP.NET log, and a cus tom log. You select which one to display by clicking one of the three radio buttons near the lower right corner of the FUSLOGVW window. The default log is used for all the failed binding operations of the current user. In other words, each user sees a dif ferent log in the FUSLOGVW window. The ASP.NET log is used for all binding opera tions related to ASP.NET. The Custom log shows only failed binding operations in a directory that you specify in the following registry key:

Tip The two Include Continued check boxes govern whether previous and next page numbers appear at the beginning and/or end of the selected text box. By default, you must manually select these check boxes for each text box in which you want the Continued text to appear. If you want one or both of these elements to appear by default, you can set your preferences here and then on the Colors And Lines tab, select the Apply Settings To New Text Boxes check box.

You can fine-tune the behavior of FUSLOGVW by setting a couple of other registry keys. As with the preceding key, you must manually add these keys to the registry if necessary. By setting the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Fusion\ForceLog registry value to 1, you log all the binding operations, not just the unsuccessful ones. As a result, you can exactly detect the location from which an assembly is loaded, which can be useful when you re trying to spot elusive bugs caused by the wrong ver sion of an assembly being bound successfully. Finally, by setting the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Fusion\LogResourceBind registry value to 1, you also get a log of the failed bind operations related to satellite assemblies (which aren t recorded in the log by default).

You ve seen that you can affect the behavior of a specific application or the whole sys tem by means of configuration files. In this section, I ll describe these files in more depth, though I ll leave out some major topics, such as ASP.NET settings, which will be covered in later chapters.

.NET applications can run on a version of the .NET Framework different from the ver sion under which the application was compiled. This technique is called redirection, and it is implemented via configuration files. If you compile an application with the first version of Visual Studio .NET, and you want to run it only under version 1.0 of the .NET Framework, you don t have to provide a configuration file (unless you need it to specify other settings, of course). Likewise, you don t need a configuration file if you compile an application with Visual Studio .NET 2003 and you want it to run only under version 1.1 of the .NET Framework. In this sec tion I ll examine how you must modify the configuration file in the remaining cases. Versions 1.0 and 1.1 of the .NET Framework use different XML tags to enable redirec tion: version 1.0 uses the <requiredRuntime> tag; version 1.1 ignores the <requiredRuntime> tag but recognizes multiple <supportedRuntime> tags, the order of which dictates which runtime version should be used when more than one version is installed on the end user machine. The simplest case is when you want to run an application compiled under version 1.0 of the .NET Framework on a machine on which version 1.1 of the .NET Framework is installed:
